The Kia Sportage gets a complete makeover for 2023 and the transformation is radical. From a pretty and interesting model, it becomes a refined and highly sophisticated product.
So much so that the segment it belongs to is about to experience a shock; that of seeing a new player arrive that has everything to dominate the category.
Here's a look at the 2023 Kia Sportage.
New style
The Sportage we've had on offer since 2017 was very pretty and distinct. That's still the case in 2023, but you have to multiply everything by 10. It's extremely attractive and its aesthetic distinction is reaching new heights. It will be easy to recognize on the road.
Better yet, its proportions are making gains. It's especially noticeable inside, especially in the rear space; it's more generous for cargo, but most of all, it's more welcoming for people to show up.
Modernized and richer interior
Still inside, there's a significant upgrade. The presentation is richer than ever, dominated by screens offering a very clear and precise display. The arrival of a new electronic gear selector frees up space, which adds to the sleekness of the presentation. Kia has retained traditional buttons for controls that you like to use intuitively, like the heated seats. A host of controls are also touch-sensitive, which adds a touch of class.
Three configurations
The most interesting thing about the new Sportage is that it can be delivered with three different powertrain configurations. The base version will have a 187-horsepower, 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine. This variant is expected to be available first, towards the end of March. An X-Line version will also be offered, with an emphasis on off-road adventure.
Then, in May, a hybrid model will be added to the offer. This time, it will use a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine for improved performance and fuel economy. And with 227 horsepower on the menu, there's no time to get bored behind the wheel.
The pièce de résistance is the plug-in hybrid variant that will arrive this summer. It will benefit from the same engine as the hybrid variant, but with a 13.8 kWh battery and a 66.9 kW electric motor, it will be able to offer a little more than 50 kilometers of pure electric range.
Capacity will be at 261 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
In terms of gearing configurations, the gasoline-powered model will benefit from a six-speed automatic transmission. It could come with front-wheel drive only, or four-wheel drive. The two hybrid variants will get an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard.
Stay tuned, because very soon, you'll be able to stop by the dealership to see the new 2023 Sportage. Be prepared to be seduced.
