In an unexpected move, Kia revealed plans for a 5-door hatchback version of its newly unveiled 2025 K4 compact sedan during the vehicle's global debut at the New York International Auto Show on Wednesday.
"I'm excited to give you a look at what's coming next, a 5-door hatch version. A practical vehicle that is aimed at a dynamic and urban lifestyle. The 5-door shares the same front and rear design as well as the smooth elegance of the sedan," stated Karim Habib, Head of Kia Global Design.
While full details were not provided, the surprise 5-door hatch announcement demonstrates Kia's intention to offer more bodystyle choices for its fourth-generation compact car beyond the traditional three-box K4 sedan shown in New York.
The 2025 K4 sedan itself ushers in a bold new design direction for Kia's compact offering, with a sleek fastback profile, widest stance in the segment at 72.8 inches, vertically oriented LED lighting, and upscale interior featuring a massive digital cockpit display.
Under the hood, the K4 sedan will offer two powertrain options in the US market – a standard 2.0L 147 horsepower engine or an available 1.6L turbo putting out 190 hp, the latter paired with a sportier GT-Line trim featuring multi-link rear suspension.
Kia's typical suite of advanced driver assistance systems will also be available on the K4 sedan, including Forward Collision Avoidance, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and the latest Highway Driving Assist 2 system.
No projected on-sale date or additional specifications were provided for the teased K4 5-door hatchback variant during the sedan's unveiling in New York. However, the hatch's shared design with the sedan suggests it will likely mirror many of the compact model's upscale styling, technology, and powertrain offerings when it eventually joins the lineup.
Kia's move to quickly expand the new K4's bodystyles demonstrates its ambitions in the ultra-competitive global compact car segment. More details on the mysterious 5-door are expected in the coming months.
