In the subcompact SUV segment, buyers are faced with some tough choices. Indeed, there are several interesting models worth considering. This is the case with the Volkswagen Taos, but also with the Kia Seltos.
Both are good choices. However, if you want to make the best choice between the two, you need to look at the three pillars of cargo space, power offered and fuel economy. Read on to see who dominates.
Cargo Space
Both of our models are spacious inside for subcompact SUVs. Comparing the four-wheel-drive versions on each side, we find that the Seltos offers more space with 1,778 liters of volume versus 1,705 for the Taos, once the rear seats are folded down. With the second seat up, the picture is the same with 752 liters of space compared to 705 for the Volkswagen.
Performance
With the Taos, you have only one mechanical choice, a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that offers 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It's a good performance, but nothing more.
With the Seltos, you have two options. If you want more power, the optional 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is available. It's rated at 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The difference is very noticeable behind the wheel; it's much more interesting.
Fuel consumption
If fuel economy is your priority, the Seltos' base engine, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, performs better in the combined. In the city, the difference is major, as it will save you 0.9 liters every 100 kilometers. That's a major difference.
Finally, let's complete with two intangible elements; the comfort and the multimedia system.
With the Seltos, the smoothness of the ride is definitely the great thing about this vehicle. With the Volkswagen, you'd think it was the dynamism, but that's no longer the case since the company designs its models for the American market. The Taos is a much more neutral vehicle, while the Seltos knows exactly where it fits.
As for the multimedia system, Volkswagen's approach is not unanimous. Conversely, Kia's interface is recognized as one of the most user-friendly in the industry.
There's no doubt about it, the Seltos is a more complete choice that's better suited to your needs.
